Tech Info & Restoration Resources
That Kombi Guy supplies genuine BBT Silver Weld-Through panels for classic VW Kombi (Split & Bay Window) and VW Beetle restorations. This page collects fitment tips, FAQs, and links to the parts you’ll need.
About BBT Silver Weld-Through Panels
- Welds cleanly: Zinc/silver weld-through coating supports SPOT, MIG, and TIG welding directly on the primer — no stripping or sanding required.
- Seam protection: The coating helps resist corrosion inside joins and overlaps.
- Time saver: Panels are ready to weld straight out of the box.
- Factory-fit geometry: Built from original VW reference tooling for precise alignment.
Fitting & Preparation Tips
- Test fit first: Dry-fit and check door gaps, body lines, and latch alignment before welding.
- Use Clecos or self-tapping screws: Secure the panel in place to maintain alignment before welding. This ensures a factory-style fit and prevents movement once you start tacking.
- Weld directly through the primer: The silver weld-through coating is designed for direct SPOT, MIG, or TIG welding — no need to grind or strip the coating.
- Control heat: Use spot welds, plug welds, or short tacks to avoid panel distortion, allowing cooling time between welds.
- Seal after welding: Once complete, apply primer to protect internal seams and any exposed bare steel.

FAQs
Do I need to strip or sand the coating before welding?
No — the silver weld-through primer is designed for direct welding. Clean only if there’s oil, dust, or contamination.
What welding process should I use?
Spot, MIG, or TIG all work perfectly. Use Clecos or self-tapping screws to align panels, then replace them one at a time with spot welds or plug welds.
Do you offer complete shells?
Complete shells for Split Window models are in progress. Register interest via the contact page.
